1. He was born in Zanzibar

Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar, the former British protectorate. His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara were Parsees whose ancestors came from Iran.

2. He was a ballet dancer

He once recorded with opera diva Montserrat Caballe on her album, Barcelona. This was one of Freddie Mercury’s most long-term dreams, and the pair would collaborate again on Billy Squier’s 1982 record.

3. He was a Zoroastrian

It’s not particularly common to think of Freddie Mercury as a Zoroastrian, but the Queen frontman actually was one. He was born Farrokh Bulsara to Parsee parents who practiced the ancient faith. The Parsees were an ethnoreligious group that fled Persia to west India during the Muslim conquest of their homeland.

The family kept up with their religious obligations, and Freddie took part in the Navjote initiation ritual at age 8. When he died, he asked for a traditional Zoroastrian funeral. The service was conducted in Avestan, an obscure language that dates back thousands of years. It was an impressive show of respect for a man who kept up with his religion.

4. He was a smoker

Freddie Mercury was an avid smoker, and he loved to smoke Marlboro reds. He also smoked Marlboro Lights and the UK brand Silk Cut.

Mercury also wore cologne, generally choosing Aramis and Lagerfeld. He was known to use perfumes as well, especially a women’s fragrance called L’Interdit.

Mercury  was a heavy smoker, which probably contributed to roughening his famous voice. He died in 1991, at age 45, of AIDS. 5. He was a philatelist

Freddie Mercury was an avid stamp collector as a child. His collection featured many rare stamps. He even designed his own stamp album! He also played piano and used the instrument in several Queen songs.

The flamboyant rock star died of complications from AIDS in 1991. He left half of his estate to Mary Austin, his long-term partner. She kept the location of his ashes a secret.

Mercury studied graphic design at Ealing College of Art and his artistic talent can be seen in his stamp albums. He also designed the famous Queen crest logo. His father, Bomi Bulsara, auctioned his stamp album in 1993 and the money was donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS charity.

6. He was a cat lover

The Queen frontman’s cats included Tiffany, Dorothy, Goliath, Lily, Oscar, and Romeo. All of the cats except for Tiffany were rescued from shelters.
